From the founding of New York State, the Adirondack mountains have called to those seeking adventure, solitude and the beauty of the mountains. The largest publicly protected area in the contiguous United States, the Adirondack Park is also home to 105 towns and villages. The region is a mix of public and private land that allows both conservation and civilization to thrive.

Founded in 1892 by the State of New York, it was a wild place. With pristine waterways, boreal forests and towering mountains, the Adirondack park consists of 2.6 million acres owned by the state of New York and 3.4 million acres which are privately owned.

The diverse nature of the Adirondacks provides something for everyone. The truly adventurous might want to become a member of the ADK46-R club. Paddling junkies and fishermen can choose from more than 3,000 lakes and ponds. And, fall color viewing is quite literally the best in the world.
